The Total-Cost Comparison I Run Before Buying Truck Upgrades: Borla 140769, GPS, Ceramic Coating, Foam Cannon

I do not turn wrenches for a living. I am the person who signs the purchase orders for a 14-person automotive accessory shop, and I have done it since late 2020 — 60 to 80 orders a year, depending on the season, across nine or ten suppliers. Lowest quote vs. total cost

The lowest quote approach is simple. Find the cheapest part that generally fits, ship it to the bay, and solve problems when the vehicle is on the lift. That can make sense if you have a fabricator who welds, bends and adjusts without charging you for the extra hour.

The total-cost approach adds the items that rarely show on an invoice: installation time, rework, hangers in the wrong spot, drone that appears at highway speed, warranty hassle, and the truck taking up a bay instead of making money. The sticker price is where the conversation starts, not where it ends.

Below are four comparisons from one project. One result surprised me enough to make me change how I write purchase orders.

Exhaust: complete system vs. headers with Borla mufflers

The exhaust got the biggest line item in the budget. Two options made it to my spreadsheet — actually three, if you count the universal muffler the service manager found online. Let me focus on the two that matter.

The first was the Borla S-Type cat-back exhaust system 140769. For the F-150 we were building, it is a complete cat-back: hardware, hangers, clamps, instructions. Our lead tech had it fitted in about three hours. The S-Type sound is aggressive without being obnoxious, which is what you want on a truck that carries customers. Car GPS monitoring system: the dimension that surprised me

My owner wanted GPS tracking on all three shop trucks. The low quote was a $50 OBD plug-in module with a phone app. The thorough option was a fleet-grade car GPS monitoring system, hardwired, with geofences and a monthly software fee.

I expected to approve the expensive system. Instead, I argued against it.

All three trucks park in a locked yard every night. They work within a 60-mile radius, and only one employee takes a truck home regularly. The $50 module gives location history and speed alerts, which covers roughly 95 percent of what the owner asked for. The fleet system would add reporting and maintenance reminders, but it adds a subscription that we would still be paying in 2030.

Here is the surprise: sometimes the lowest quote is the correct answer. The expensive GPS wins only when it reduces a cost you can name. If vehicles sleep off-site, cross state lines, or are driven by employees you do not fully trust, the monthly fee is easy to justify. For three trucks that come home every night, it is a nice report generator.

Ceramic coating kit: cheap in price, expensive in preparation

New paint needed protection. I compared a ceramic coating kit for cars with a professional install. The kit was tempting: the internet sells them for under $100, and it is a real product, not a spray detailer. The pro quote came in around $900 (based on a local quote in December 2024; verify current pricing).

The total cost difference was not in the product. It was in the environment. Ceramic coatings cure. The panel has to be decontaminated, polished, and wiped down properly, then the coating has to cure for 24 to 48 hours in a clean, temperature-controlled area. My shop has a detailing bay, but it is not dust-free, and winter humidity is not something we control. A bad coating application by our own staff at $80 would mean paying someone to wet-sand and reapply later. That is a failure cost of several hundred dollars.

We paid the installer. For a vehicle that sits inside at night and has a gloss finish we want to show customers, the professional coating was the lower-risk route. I still believe a ceramic coating kit can make sense for a patient owner with a garage and a weekend. For a business that cannot afford a second trip, the paid install was the total-cost answer.

What to put in foam cannon

Once the coating was done, someone asked me what to put in foam cannon. The question sounds basic, but it caused a real argument in the shop. Dish soap foams well and cuts grease. A lot of people use it because it is already under the sink. The problem is that dish soap is a degreaser. It strips waxes, sealants, and the hydrophobic layer that makes coated paint easy to clean.

What belongs in the cannon is a pH-neutral car shampoo designed for foam cannons. The foam itself is less important than people think. Its real job is to cling to the paint, loosen dirt, and add lubrication so the wash mitt does not drag grit across the coating. Rinsing well matters more than foam thickness. I also learned to check the dilution ratio on the shampoo bottle before adding anything else. The expensive ceramic-safe soap is not always necessary, but the soap is not the place I would try to save after spending $900 on coating.

So, the answer: use pH-neutral automotive shampoo, follow the dilution label, skip the dish soap, and let the foam sit for a few minutes before rinsing. The foam cannon itself can be a cheap one.

Which route would I take again?

There is no single answer, and I would not trust a buyer who gives you one.

  • If your shop has fabrication staff and the labor is not billed, cheaper universal exhaust parts can work. If you pay shop rate and value bay time, a complete cat-back system usually wins.
  • A commercial GPS subscription only makes sense when you can point to a cost it eliminates. Otherwise, a decent plug-in monitor is enough.
  • Ceramic coating is an environment decision before a product decision. No coating kit performs well if the paint prep is rushed or the cure space is wrong.
  • For the foam cannon, clean maintenance is the whole point. A cheap pH-neutral shampoo used correctly beats an expensive soap used badly.

Prices I mention came from quotes in December 2024 or January 2025 and public sources like borla.com. They will change. What will not change is the math: part plus labor plus rework plus downtime equals the real price. I write that on every estimate now. It took one frustrating exhaust job in 2023 for me to learn it.
